held at The Boca Raton Computer Society
In the winter months Pamela and her husband Ernest, volunteer
their time to teach members how to
improve their computer skills at the Boca Raton Computer Society in Florida.
The Boca Raton Computer Society is a non-profit organization,
with almost 1,000 members in 2006, has been
helping members to use and learn about their computers through volunteers since
1983.

BRCS Members Ready to Learn How
To Back Up Their Data
The “elite” of the Boca Raton Computer Society
attended Pamela Tabak’s Novice and Intermediate Special Interest Group on
February 21st 2006. Pamela conveyed a special welcome to the new BRCS
President, Bob Balogh, Board Members, Jerry Rutstein, Jerry Dinerman and SIG
Leader Jerry Flomen.
Pamela spent the first few minutes welcoming new members and guests and
explaining the benefits of joining the Boca Raton Computer Society.
Membership forms were handed out to the member’s guests.
In the first hour Pamela explained, with the aid
of a PowerPoint Presentation, the importance of backing up data on external
medium ensuring that your data will be safe if your computer crashed or
malfunctioned. Then Pamela showed how to download, install and configure
Microsoft’s new Beta edition of Windows Defender. This was demonstrated with a
“screen recording” that Pamela prepared in advance because Internet access was
not available at the SIG location.
The second hour was dedicated to member’s
questions on hardware and software problems.

Members
gathered to review how to Buy and Sell on eBay for the last session before the
summer break. Pamela showed a PowerPoint Presentation explaining the eBay
procedures and answered member’s questions. In conclusion Pamela assured the
members that she is still available to answer questions by e-mail which she will

Members enjoying
the Q & A Session at the Novice & Intermediate SIG
The
March session of the Novice & Intermediate SIG began with Jerry Flomen
suggesting that members backup their hard drives on an external unit. Jerry
demonstrated how easy it is to assemble the unit and explained the benefits of
having this backup, should the hard drive in a desktop or laptop computer fail.
Pamela demonstrated
how the new Beta Version of Microsoft’s AntiSpyware program saved her browser
from being hijacked and explained the benefits of downloading this free software
and running it regularly. She emphasized that a System Restore point should be
created before a new program is installed or files are downloaded from the
internet and demonstrated how this should be done. After other features of
Windows XP were explained and demonstrated there was a one hour question period.
In conclusion Jerry
announced that while Pamela was up north for the summer, Bill Marcuse would be
assisting him with the program. Pamela assured the members that she is still

New and returning BRCS
members filled the room for the first EXCEL SIG (Special Interest Group) of the
season.
Pamela
began the evening by explaining that the EXCEL program can be used not only for
spreadsheets but for "fun projects" like CROSSWORD PUZZLES, GRAPHICS, PHONE AND
ADDRESS LISTS and much more.
The second
hour was devoted to answering questions from members on their EXCEL projects and
problems. Headers and Footers, Inserting and Deleting Rows and Columns,
Inserting the Date and Time, Text Wrapping, Alphabetizing Lists, and Changing
the Decimal Place were a few of the topics covered.
The two hour
session ended with members gathering around Pamela to ask additional questions.
The next session of
Discovering EXCEL will be held on Wednesday March 9th 2005 at 7pm

Demonstration
There was a full house again this month at the newly
named, Novice & Intermediate SIG. Jerry Flomen
and Pamela Tabak hosted the evening beginning with
information on the new virus called "Tsunami Disaster! Please
Help!" Anyone receiving an email with this subject line should be
aware that it may contain a virus. This information was
gathered from a TechRepublic mailing.
Pamela
demonstrated features of XP on her laptop with the aid of the BRCS projector.
This month she used a visual aid soft-ware that recorded online
procedures which could be shown offline as a teaching aid.
Topics covered were: Remote Assistance, Printing one page of the
Boca Bits Magazine from the online PDF file, Making web
pages available when offline, Tiling and Cascading Web
pages, Ad-Aware - how it works and much more.

eBay
was a full house for the first Q & A meeting of the season. Members asked
questions on posting items to eBay and Pamela showed her Buying and Selling on
eBay PowerPoint presentation with the aid of the BRCS projector and her laptop
computer.

The Novice & Intermediate Question and
Answer meeting was again well attended this month when 46 members filled the
room at the Sheriff’s Office on Congress Avenue in Delray
Beach. Everyone was seated by 6.45pm when Jerry Flomen began the meeting
with “Year End – House Keeping” explaining that it
is of the utmost importance to keep the Virus Definitions up to date and to
perform regular maintenance on a daily and weekly basis. Information for these

Pamela explained how to organize Files and Folders in My Documents, how to make
a new folder on the desktop and change the folder icon. How
to download and save a photo from an email without losing it.
The second half of the meeting was devoted

projector and Pamela’s laptop. Many members were writing notes but Pamela
